All The Tips You Need To Be Able To Afford London

If there’s one thing, we know about London is that it is not a cheap city to live in. Which makes it even more difficult for students to afford. Now, London is a city that offers it all. From the most unique places to eat out to the best places to shop. So, you will have to curb those desires, if you want to avoid living off of instant ramen most of the months. All of this may sound like a lot of effort, but it is not that difficult. With the right help and mindset, everything is possible. All you have to do is plan how you will be spending your money and stick to it.

Here are a few tips that will help you live a comfortable life in London without spending too much:

Accommodation

If you’re not already aware, accommodation happens to eat up a major part of your budget. So, if there’s something you need to cut down on, it's your accommodation expenses. And there are plenty of ways that you can do this. You could choose a student accommodation in London that is shared with other students, to cut costs or find a place that is not too luxurious. If you’re choosing private student halls in London, you will want to ensure that it's closer to your university, to help you save up on commute.

Going Out To Eat

If you’re a university student in London, you are going to be socializing. A lot. Which means that you will probably be eating/drinking out a lot. So, the wise thing to do would be to go out on discount nights, so you don’t have to spend as much money. Many restaurants also offer student discounts, so ensure that you always ask. However, making your meals would be the ideal way to help you save money. Try to limit eating out as much as you can, if you’re on a strict budget.

Commute

London is a well-connected city, which can be beneficial for students. There are plenty of ways you can choose to commute to London. The Tube, which is London’s most used way of transport is fast but can get a little expensive. If you are going to be commuting every day, you will want to think of a cheaper way to do so. Purchasing a London travel card or the Oyster card will make it easier on your pockets. Paying with cash will almost certainly cost you more than the cards, so choose wisely. If you live at a shorter distance from your university, you can also try to walk or take a bicycle by leaving your house slightly earlier instead of spending money commuting. This will help you keep in shape while saving a lot of money.

Get a Job

The best way to afford the life you want is to get a job! Getting a part-time job will help you in two ways; earning money and adding to your career. If you have a busy schedule throughout the week, you could try working the weekends too. It’ll also help you keep busy and make friends outside of your peer groups in London. Sometimes, a part-time job can also help you network, helping you further your career if you work in a field related to your career.

Take Advantage of Being a Student

While London may be an expensive city, it is also designed to meet students’ needs. Being a student in London means that you are eligible for countless discounts and offers, almost everywhere you go. From cafes to theatres, to gyms, to live shows, to art galleries/museums to OTT platforms, students can avail of decent discounts everywhere they go. Many parks and exhibitions are also free to visit, letting you enjoy a day out without spending money at all!

We hope this list can be of use in helping you make the right choices and live comfortably in London as a student!
